Environmental Analysis Laboratory

Head of Laboratory: Dr. Tran Dinh Phien

The Department of Chemistry and Environment/Vietnam- Russia Tropical Center was established in September 2009 on the basis of the Analysis Department of the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center (established on July 18, 1992) with 2 laboratories, namely the Dioxin Analysis Laboratory and the Environmental Analysis Laboratory.

The Environmental Analysis Laboratory has the following functions: Do research, apply and develop analysis techniques for environmental and food components; investigate and assess the level of environmental pollution and its impact on human health. In recent years, the laboratory has carried out monitoring and analysis of toxic substances in the environment (POPs, VOCs, SVOCs, PAHs, heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides and other physicochemical criteria).

MAIN RESEARCH DIRECTIONS

- Study and develop analytical methods; monitoring, assessment of quality, control of environmental pollution; the change of pollutants in the environment;

- Study simulation models to predict environmental quality; software to calculate environmental quality into reality;

- Propose, preside and participate in the implementation of scientific and technological tasks at all levels according to the functions and tasks of the Center. Provide training in monitoring and analysis skills.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

The Environmental Analysis Laboratory has a full system of machinery meeting international and Vietnamese standards for research activities. Specifically:

- Clean laboratory system with positive pressure, gas treatment system, wastewater treatment meets national technical standards.

- Field monitoring and sampling equipment meet domestic and international standards: Dust and exhaust gas sampling device isokinetic A-2000(US); total suspended particle sampler (TSP); fine dust sampler PM2.5, PM10 Polltech (India); low flow air sampler Gilair Plus (Germany), Buck (USA); Wildco water sampler (USA); and underground water sampling device by depth.

- Sample preservation and sample preparation equipment: sample storage cabinet system; extraction system by microwave Ethos Up/Milestone (Italy); supelco sample enrichment extraction system (Germany); shaker, shaker IKA (Germany), automatic concentrator, ultrasonic tank, etc.

- System of materials and laboratory chemicals of Sigma Aldrich, Supelco, Merck, CIL,

- Analytical equipment: 01 Gas Chromatography/High Resolution Mass Spectrometer (Germany), 01 Liquid Chromatograph Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer Agilent (Germany), 01 High Resolution Gas Chromatography/High Resolution Mass Spectrometer Thermo Scientific (Germany), 02 spectral systems: AAS Thermo Scientific (Germany) and UV-Vis Thermo Scientific (Germany) meet the analysis of organic pollutants, elements, cations and anions in accordance with the standard methods of the US, Europe, Japan.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND REWARDS

Some achievements

- The Laboratory has presided and participated in the implementation of 10 topics, tasks and projects at all levels:

- Successfully develop methods of monitoring and analyzing some indicators of POPs, VOCs, herbicides, heavy metals, dust TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and some basic physical and chemical indicators in environmental samples.

- Be recognized with Certificate of ISO 17025:2017 (VILAS 856); Certificates of recognition the eligibility for environmental monitoring activities (VIMCERTS 256), with over 150 environmental parameters of soil/sediment, solid waste, air, emissions and water.

- The Laboratory has participated in monitoring and analyzing a number of toxic substances, assessing the environmental quality of surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and air during the detoxification process at Da Nang and Bien Hoa airports and timely issuing warnings and recommending measures to minimize the release of dioxins and other harmful substances in the environment.

- Participate in monitoring, analyzing and evaluating emissions of other toxic chemicals generated from industrial and daily life activities, etc.

- Number of declared scientific articles: published 10 articles on national and international journals.

FORM OF COOPERATION

 - Scientific and industrial services: Give consultancy, develop activities of monitoring, analyzing, testing, assessing environmental impacts, handle toxic substances to protect the environment in accordance with the needs of society.

- Cooperate to improve analytical capacity with international interlaboratory organizations Intercal AB, Sweden; InterCinD, Italy.

- Participate in and coordinate in the implementation of topics, tasks and projects on environmental analysis and monitoring.
