Environmental Analysis Laboratory

Head of Department: Ph.D. Nguyen Trong Hiep

Introduction

The Department of environmental analysis is a research unit of the Southern Branch of the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center and was established on 12 June 2003. The department has the functions of carrying out scientific research, applying and transferring technologies, providing scientific and technological services, and training human resources in the field of researching, analyzing, and treating environmental problems.

Main research directions

 -  Studying methods to analyze environmental pollutants.

-  Developing solutions and technologies for the treatment of soil, water, air, and other objects in the environment and proposing measures to eliminate pollutants.

 -  Assessing environmental impacts.

 -  Implementing and transferring technology and technical advances in doing research, analysis, and cleaning up the environment.

 - Participating in training human resources.

Facilities and equipment

The laboratories meet the standards of ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 (Vilas 1236), including:

  • A cabinet for sample processing and sample analyzing where chemical preparation, sample processing, chemical experiments, analysis, titration, and analysis of indicators: TSS, BOD, COD, etc.
  • An AAS cabinet for analyzing heavy metal parameters, such as As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, Mn, Ni, Hg...
  • A TOC and UV_Vis cabinet for analyzing environmental parameters, such as TOC, N-NH3+, N-NO2- N-NO3-, Cl-, PO43-, total N, total P, etc.
  • A cabinet for storage of samples and equipment for maintaining stable conditions for storing samples before and after analysis and storing equipment.
  • Equipment and tools for sampling mud, soil, sediment, surface water, groundwater, or sampling water according to the required depth; sampling equipment for total suspended particles (TSP) and fine particles (PM10, PM2.5), dioxins, and some other criteria in the air or in the emissions. The equipment of the brands Wildco, KC Denmark, Thomas Scientific, Ekotechnika, Testo - Germany, Keika, Tisch, etc. originate from the US and Europe and meet domestic and international standards.
  • Analytical equipment: The AAS (F, HG, GF) atomic absorption spectrometry system - model iCE 3500, Thermo Scientific (USA); The Thermo Scientific Evolution 300/600 UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Thermo Scientific (USA); Total Organic Carbon Analyzer TOC-L series, Shimadzu (Japan).

Main results

- Completed nearly 40 scientific and technological topics and tasks at all levels, many of which have high practical applications such as 05 groups of products for air, water, smoke, bacteria, toxins, and chemicals treatment, and used for the pharmaceutical industry (meeting GMP and seafood HACCP standards); 07 personal protective equipment against dust, bacteria with the same quality as imported products. The product has been quickly and widely applied to serve biological problems such as the SARS pandemic in 2003; The incubator and fume hood are widely applied to the pharmaceutical, medical, biotechnological areas and laboratories inside and outside the army.

- In the field of environmental cleanup, many studies have been carried out on some models, technologies, equipment, and materials used in environmental cleanups, such as ozonation water treatment; treatment of wastewater containing aromatic compounds; removal of heavy metals from water; materials and equipment using a modified bee stone for purifying well water from arsenic, experiments on the extraction of nitrogen and phosphorus in livestock wastewater in the form of struvite sediment by the electrochemical method.

- With the tendency of applying green technologies and environment-friendly solutions, the Department of Environmental Analysis has initially conducted research and trials on the application of microorganisms and aquatic plants to treat domestic wastewater, wastewater after biogas of breeding facilities, and tapioca starch processing facilities. Initial results show that it is highly effective and can be widely applied.

Form of cooperation

- Coordinating with scientific and technological organizations of Vietnam and the Russian Federation in the field of environmental research.

-  Carrying out contracts for consulting services for assessing the impacts of various types of activities on the environment, scientific and technical services for the application, and transfer of technologies in the field of research, analysis, and environmental treatment.
