The Institute of Tropical Medicine was formerly the Sub-Institute of Biomedice - Medicine, established on July 18, 1988 (According to Decision No. 288/QD-TM dated July 18, 1988 of the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army). Biomedical research has been one of the main research directions since the establishment of the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center.
LABORATORIES:
Laboratory of Toxicology and Tropical Diseases
Laboratory of Adaptation and Military Medicine
Laboratory of Pharmacy
High-tech Research and Treatment Center
FUNCTIONS
Implementing scientific and technological tasks, international cooperation in scientific research, application and transfer of technology, scientific and technical services and training in the direction of tropical biomedicine serving military, national defense and socio-economic tasks.
MISSION
- Carrying out scientific and technological research in the fields of biomedicine, toxicology, tropical diseases, military medicine, pharmacology and disease treatment.
- Assuming the prime responsibility for, and coordinating with agencies, organizations and research institutes of the Russian Federation in scientific research, application and technology transfer:
+ Researching on the effects of dioxins, dioxin-like substances and other toxic substances on human health and solutions to overcome them.
+ Researching on epidemiology, surveillance, prevention of epidemics, infectious diseases and preventive measures.
+ Researching, developing and applying advanced technologies and techniques in monitoring, diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
+ Researching on psychophysiology, occupational health and adaptability of soldiers in tropical conditions.
+ Researching and applying biologically bioactive compounds from tropical animals, plants and microorganisms.
+ Researching, applying, and producing pharmaceuticals, biological products in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
- Advising Steering Committees for Prevention and Control of Dangerous Diseases at all levels to implement surveillance and diagnosis, and taking appropriate response measures in emergency epidemic situations.
- Performing scientific and technical services, medical services, application of technology transfer in treatment and health care for soldiers and people.
- Coordinating scientific and technological activities in the field of Tropical Biomedicine with units in the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center and with domestic and foreign organizations and research institutes.
- Building and developing scientific and technological potentials towards tropical biomedicine and participate in training scientific staff.
RESULTS
- Developing a methodology to detect, evaluate and recognize long-term biomedical consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin on humans and methods of investigation, preventive treatment and rehabilitation for victims. Having made epidemiological survey of more than 30,000 people, made more than 200 sets of victim files to serve the lawsuit against US chemical companies. Application of Russian bioregulatory peptide preparations to improve health and support treatment for 300 veterans exposed to Agent Orange/dioxin.
- Researching on epidemiology and animal epidemiology of some emerging and re-emerging dangerous diseases transmitted from animals to humans; tropical infectious diseases: typhus, dengue, malaria, fever caused by spirochetes Leptospira, meningococcus, streptococcus, Whitmore... It is concluded that in the Central Highlands there is no natural outbreak but only existing Secondary population outbreaks or “near-human outbreaks” are very important in the plague prevention strategy in the Central Highlands and Vietnam.
- Researching on the adaptability of Vietnamese military pilots to aircraft manufactured by the Soviet Union and Russia and propose measures to protect the health and prolong the flying age for pilots.
- Strengthening capacity of psychophysiological research in specific military conditions: Researching and ensuring military medical care for submarine troops, participating in assessment of psycho-physiological health, contributing to ensuring occupational health for submarine sailors.
- Researching and extracting biologically active substances from animals and plants to produce drugs and functional foods.
- Treating with hyperbaric oxygen for more than 200,000 patients at the Center's facilities; consulting, supporting technique, providing specialized training in hyperbaric oxygen therapy for medical facilities. Performing medical examination and treatment services at the Center for High-Tech Research and Treatment.
