Institute of Tropical Ecology (since September 2009) is a research institute under Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center, established under Decision No. 250/QD-TM dated February 18, 2009 of the Chief of General Staff. The Institute has 3 affiliated laboratories: Laboratory of Terrestrial Ecology, Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology and Laboratory of Military Environmental Ecology. The predecessor was the Sub-Institute of Tropical Ecology (founded on March 7, 1988) belonging to the Vietnam - Soviet Tropical Center. Up to now, the Institute of Tropical Ecology has spent 32 years researching issues of tropical ecology and environment in Vietnam.

FUNCTION

Functions, tasks and staffing organization of Institute of Tropical Ecology are specified in Decision No. 940/QD-TTNDVN dated August 11, 2009 and Decision No. 2201/QD-TTNDVN dated July 20, 2020 of General Director of Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center. The Institute has the function of scientific research; applying and transferring scientific and technological research results into practice; Coordinating research and staff training.

MISSION

- Researching on biodiversity, structure and function organization of tropical ecosystems and landscapes; changes of organisms at the level of populations, communities, and ecosystems.

- Investigating, researching and proposing solutions and measures to manage, conserve, restore and develop biological resources.

- Researching and selecting useful species for military and economic purposes.

- Researching on the effects of natural processes, human activities, military and national defense activities on natural resources and the environment; developing solutions to ensure ecological and environmental security in military activities.

- Researching on climate change; assessing the effects of climate change and extreme weather on constructions and military and civilian activities; proposing solutions to cope and minimize.

- Environmental monitoring activities; environmental impact assessment of military and civilian projects and activities; proposing solutions to overcome and minimize.

- Performing scientific and technical services, transferring technology in the fields of ecology, biodiversity and environmental protection.

- Training and participating in staff training in the fields of ecology, biodiversity and environmental protection..

RESULTS 

In the period 2016-2020, the Institute has implemented 2 national-level projects, 3 projects at the Ministry of National Defense level, 4 tasks at the Ministry of National Defense level, 13 topics and topic branches of the Coordination Committee to Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, 11 topics, technical tasks at the Center level, many topics, contracts with localities and units inside and outside the army. The Institute has published 53 articles of SCI/Scopus/VAK, 100 articles in national journals, dozens of articles in domestic and foreign conferences.

  - Researching, selecting, creating and training indigenous H'mong bobtail dogs to detect drugs; researching and using Dangsoi (wolf-like) native dogs in search and detection of mines and explosives left over from the war.

  - Researching and evaluating the effects of climate change on military constructions and activities in the area of ​​Military Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9, the provincial defense areas in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta; proposing solutions to cope and minimize.

  - Researching the current status of biodiversity, ecological characteristics and landscape in the Truong Sa Islands in service of resource management and environmental protection in association with military and national defense.

  - Conducting research in 19 National Parks and 16 Conservation Areas and many typical biosphere areas in both land and sea of ​​Vietnam. Having discovered and described many animals and plants that are new to science and endemic to Vietnam.

  - Researching the scientific basis on the process of destruction and restoration of vegetation under human impacts and proposing measures for regeneration and restoration.

  - Researching heat, moisture and CO2 flows in forest ecosystems to quantify the role of tropical forests in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
