Laboratory of Tropical durability
Head of Department: Ph.D. Nguyen Van Chi
Introduction
The Tropical Durability Department is a research unit of the Coastal Branch of the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center and was established in 1989. The department has the functions of carrying out scientific research, applying and transferring technologies in the field of enhancing tropical durability of materials and technical equipment.
Main research directions
- Studying the impacts of the maritime tropical climate on the resistance of metallic, non-metallic materials, coatings, and painting against corrosion, fungi, termite infestation, and marine biological fouling. Types of atmospheric testing include outdoor yard testing, sea surface testing, indoor testing, and microbiological testing. Types of tests in natural seawater include in-depth tests; periodic wetting tests; spray tests and rotation tests.
- Coordinating in studying the influences of tropical climate factors on the durability of materials and technical equipment.
- Studying the creation and transfer of environmental-friendly technologies of alternative and application-oriented materials and coatings against corrosion and marine biological fouling.
- Studying to improve the tropical durability of equipment and machines.
Facilities and equipment
The Department is equipped with a system of research laboratories in the Coastal Branch and Dam Bay marine climatic testing station with about 100 devices and tools. The laboratory is VILAS certified in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (code VILAS 1258) in the field of mechanics and chemistry, including:
- Testing and generally evaluating of coatings;
- Assessing the levels of mechanical and mechanical-physical resistance and the aging level of materials in the marine and island climate;
- Evaluating corrosion and protection against biological fouling in the marine environment.
- Carrying out natural tests at Dam Bay marine climatic testing station.
Main results
- Published more than 50 articles in scientific journals, including dozens of articles in international journals belonging to the ISI/Scopus list.
- Manufactured and tested moisture control systems in the storage of weapons and equipment using solar energy.
- Manufactured equipment for the removal of biofouling in the marine environment using the cavitation effect; system protecting against biofouling of cooling pipelines according to the electrochemical principle.
- Created water-glass paints with high zinc content.
Form of cooperation
Coordinating with units inside and outside VRTC to perform scientific and technological tasks, experimental services in the form of contracts, research cooperation, technology transfer, etc.
