Russian Language Training

Training Russian language for military officers and personnel is a task assigned as part of the functions and duties of the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center. In 2002, under the Ministry of Defense's directive, the Center successfully organized its first intensive Russian language training course for the Ministry of National Denfence, with 26 trainees who were officers from the Artillery Arms and the Signal Arms. To date, after more than 20 training courses, the program has expanded to include trainees from various other military Services such as the Navy, Air Defence-Air Force, and Border Guard. The Center has trained thousands of officers proficient in the Russian language, enabling them to directly operate equipment manufactured by the Russian Federation.

To ensure effective training, the Center has prioritized developing tailored curricula to suit the diverse needs of trainees from different military units and branches. Teaching methods are continuously innovated, and instructors are regularly sent to Russia for advanced training and participate in workshops and training courses within and outside the military. In addition to its Vietnamese teaching staff, the Center also partners with Russian instructors, creating an immersive environment for trainees to maximize interaction with native speakers.

In recent years, the Center has adopted Russian language standards aligned with Vietnam's six-level foreign language proficiency framework, based on the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). With a nine-month study period, trainees aim to achieve Level 3 proficiency in Vietnam's framework (equivalent to B1 in the CEFR). The program is divided into three modules: A1, A2, and B1.

After four years of implementation, trainees of advanced Russian language training have shown significant improvement, achieving proficiency levels equivalent to B1 in the CEFR. All trainees successfully complete the course, with 50-80% obtaining a B1 certificate upon graduation.

Upon completing the program, officers and personnel successfully leverage their acquired knowledge in their respective fields, strengthening their individual competencies and contributing to the overall development of their units and the military as a whole.
