Under the permission of the Ministry of Defense and the Coordinating Committee on Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, on November 30th, 2017, in Hanoi, Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center held a scientific conference entitled "Tropical Ecology" - Some scientific and practical issues” to celebrate 30 years of establishment of the Center (March 7th, 1988 - March 7th, 2018) .

Scientific Conference: "Tropical Ecology - Some Scientific and Practical Issues" celebrating 30 years of establishment (March 7th, 1988 - March 7th, 2018) of the Tropcenter

Major General, Dr. Nguyen Hong Du and Doctor of Science Kuznetsov A.N, Co-Directors General of Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, co-chaired the conference.

Participating in the conference were nearly 200 officials of scientific management and research on ecology and environment from the General Departments, Departments, Bureaus, and Institutes; National Parks and Nature Reserves; Provincial and Municipal Departments of Natural Resources and Environment of Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, and Hai Phong; National Programs: aquatic Program and Central Highlands Program; and scientific staff of the Center and other units in the Army.

Tropical ecology is one of the three main research directions of Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center. The Tropical Ecology direction includes Terrestrial Ecology, aquatic Ecology, and Military Environmental Ecology. Its research subjects and areas are spread throughout the territory of Vietnam in all three regions of the North, Central, and South, and the seas and islands... Over the past 30 years of construction and development, despite of many difficulties, especially in the period immediately after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Tropical Ecology research direction has always been maintained and developed continuously.

More than 10 reports presented directly at the Conference and other reports sent to the Organizing Committee to be compiled into the Conference Proceedings showed that tasks of the Tropical Ecology direction include: 1) Research on biodiversity and structural and functional organization of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems; 2) Applied ecological research (including military ecology); formulation and proposal of solutions for rational use of biological resources, prioritizing applications for military-defense activities and agricultural and fishery development; 3) Research on the consequences of chemical warfare and effects of human activities on ecosystems; proposal of solutions and technologies to control and restore polluted environment and natural ecosystems; 4) Research on the effects of climate change on ecology and military-defense activities and proposal of solutions to minimize damage and other negative impacts; and 5) Research on the use of animals, plants, and their preparations for national defense and economic purposes.

From experimental research activities in the early days of its establishment, so far, the Tropical Ecology has been developed in all three fields of terrestrial ecology, aquatic ecology, and military environmental ecology. The research results have not only increased in quantity and quality but also deeply solved major problems of science such as the law of formation and development and dynamics of tropical ecosystems and biodiversity resources. It has also contributed to serving the military and socio-economic practical needs in natural resource management, sustainable management of ecosystems, and environmental protection in Vietnam.

Major General, Dr. Nguyen Hong Du concluding the Conference

Concluding the Conference, Major General Nguyen Hong Du assessed the Conference as a great success. The presentations and reports of the Conference showed a part of research results towards Tropical Ecology in recent years conducted by Vietnamese and Russian scientists within the framework of activities of Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center and a close cooperation in scientific research between the Center with a number of agencies and research institutes inside and outside the Army. On behalf of the Board of General Directors of the Center, he thanked the presence of the delegates and the cooperation and assistance in the past time of units and agencies inside and outside the Army./.
