Scientific conference "Tropical ecology and environment serving the management of resources and environmental protection of the territory and the territorial water of Vietnam" towards the 35th Anniversary of the Vietnam – Russia Tropical Center

On the morning of December 29, 2022, in Hanoi, the Joint Vietnam - Russia Tropical Science and Technology Research Center (VRTC) successfully organized the scientific conference "Tropical ecology and environment serving the management of resources and environmental protection of the territory and the territorial water of Vietnam", this is one of the activities towards the 35th Anniversary of the VRTC (March 7th, 1988 - March 07th, 2023).  Colonel, Dr. Pham Duy Nam, Deputy General Director of VRTC and Dr. Sc. Kuznetsov A.N., co-General Director of VRTC co-chaired the conference.

Attending the conference were the Board of General Directors of VRTC; delegates from science and technology organizations of Vietnam and Russia; representatives of organizations inside and outside the military; leaders of organizations and scientists of VRTC.

Inaugurating the conference, Colonel, Dr. Pham Duy Nam, Deputy General Director of VRTC stated that: the Joint Vietnam - Russia Tropical Science and Technology Research Center is a cooperation model without precedent in practice, which holds a special position in the traditional friendship between Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

Over nearly 35 years of construction and development, VRTC has grown in all aspects, becoming a prestigious multidisciplinary tropical scientific and technological research organization in Vietnam, Russia, and in the world; actively contributing to the development of science and technology, socio-economics, national defense and security of the two countries, contributing to the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership of Vietnam and The Russian Federation.

Addressing the conference, he affirmed that: "Tropical ecology and environment" is one of the three main research directions of VRTC, which has been shaped and developed over the past 35 years. Since its establishment, the Center has received thousands of Russian scientists and experts to Vietnam to study tropical ecology and environment. Among them were many Academicians, Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and hundreds of highly qualified specialists from 30 research organizations in the Russian Federation.

He also hoped that this conference is an opportunity to exchange information and enhance cooperation possibilities between VRTC and different organizations on scientific and technological activities and product development in the direction of Tropical ecology and environment.

On this occasion, on behalf of the Center, Deputy General Director Pham Duy Nam expressed his thanks and gratitude to the organizations, agencies, and scientists of Vietnam and Russia for their great support and cooperation with the Center in implementing scientific tasks. He also expected that VRTC and the partners will maintain this firm cooperation and support in the time to come.

In the plenary session and 03 thematic sessions, delegates heard nearly 30 scientific reports and discussed the outstanding results in recent years of the Center in the direction of Tropical Ecology and Environment such as (1) Biodiversity and status of terrestrial ecosystems, including areas affected by dioxin; propose solutions to conserve and rationally use natural resources. (2) Dioxins, dioxin-like compounds, and other organic pollutants in tropical ecosystems in Vietnam. (3) Biodiversity and state of aquatic ecosystems; building the scientific basis for the rational use, conservation, and restoration of water ecosystems. (4) Synthetic research on ecology and biological resources of Truong Sa Islands (Spratly Islands) to enhance resource management and environmental protection in association with national defense and security and the Mekong river ecosystem under the impacts of global climate change and human activities. (5) Applying results of basic research for national defense and civilian purposes.

On this occasion, the Center published 02 special issues of the Journal of Tropical Science and Technology consisting of more than 40 articles subjecting to the theme of the conference.
